Medical Imaging and Therapy Systems
Description
The I3M Group of Medical Imaging and Therapy Systems is involved on the development of novel instrumentation and software algorithms in the area of medical imaging, mainly focused for in-vivo imaging of molecular and morphological signatures of diseases in humans and small laboratory animals.
Our main interest is focused on design and development of new devices that efficiently image objects, both in the ionization radiation emission domain (Positron Emission Tomography, PET) and non ionization radiation based imaging techniques(Ultrasound and Magnetic Resonance Imaging, MRI), although development of new devices for multimodal medical imaging diagnostic, combining ionization and non ionization techniques, is developed in our group too. Laser based accelerators for medical applications (radiopharmaceuticals production and hadron therapy) are also investigated by our group.
The goals of our research are to design devices and techniques beyond the current state-of-the–art, in terms of efficiency, sensitivity, spatial, energy, and temporal resolutions. The algorithms developed by our group aim to provide the best achievable image quality with the available data in the most efficient way in terms of computing time and quantitative accuracy.
