The objective of the proposal is the study of radiobiological effects in living cells using two classes of radiation sources. On the one hand, protons and x-rays generated by ultra-intense laser pulses where the particles are concentrated at very short intervals, corresponding to ultra-high dose rates. And on the other hand, protons from an accelerator radio frequency with a constant intensity. These two extremes are of very high interest for new modalities of

external radiotherapy, especially the so-called Flash effect that, in recent years, has revealed the importance of dose rate as a key parameter for cancer treatment.

To achieve this objective, researchers from various disciplines have formed a stable group of excellence with the support of its scientific infrastructure. Their combined capabilities will allow advances in several frontier fields: the development of stable particle sources based on ultra-intense lasers, the application of these sources to the biomedical field, the precise measurement of radiation dose in ultra-short pulses, and the systematic and comparative study of cellular effects caused by different types of radiation.
