FULL BODY INSIGHT

DESIGN, DEVELOPMENT AND CHARACTERIZATION OF PET SYSTEMS BASED ON CONTINUOUS CRYSTAL AND LXE, AS WELL AS THEIR INTEGRATION IN A FULL BODY SYSTEM.

The overall aim of the project is to design and develop PET technology for humans in what is known as full body. This means that instead of covering 20-25 cm of axial field as conventional equipment (WBPET) usually does, technology will be developed to increase the axial field to at least 75 cm. This, in general terms, will increase the detection efficiency by a factor of 10-20 (depending on other parameters). In addition, it is intended to incorporate into the technology what is known as time of flight (TOF), with an accuracy of at least 500 ps. Therefore, between axial enhancement and TOF, the efficiency in sensitivity could increase by a factor of about 30. This would allow faster diagnoses, less patient dose, dynamic imaging of various organs, etc…

To achieve this design, the tender suggests developing two technologies. The consortium (UTE) formed by three companies (FBI, OCV and Quibim), led by FBI, proposes the use of semi-monolithic crystals and liquid xenon.
